The March 2020 update to Microsoft's wildly popular Python extension for Visual Studio Code focused on improving quality via bug fixes, but it did introduce a new debugger.
The updated Python extension is available for download from Microsoft's Visual Studio Code (VS Code) marketplace, where it's currently the most popular programming language by a long mile.
The upgrade also introduces the ability to run Python tests with coverage. Introduced October 3, Visual Studio Code 1.94 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac, or Linux via the project web page.
Version 1.0 of the new debugger for Python in Visual Studio Code (VS Code), called Debugpy, shows up in the latest update of the popular Python tooling for the open source, cross-platform code editor.
The Visual Studio Code product itself ships under a standard Microsoft product license, as it has a small percentage of Microsoft-specific customizations. It’s free despite the commercial license.
